The International Distinction in Education Award (IDEA) is given by the University of Iowa to deserving incoming first-year international citizens. This is to say that U.S. citizens and permanent residents may not apply. 

Who Is Eligible for the University of Iowa International Distinction in Education Award (IDEA)?

For you to qualify to be considered for the International Distinction in Education Award, you must:

  • Be a graduate of a high school outside the United States. 
  • Not be a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States. U.S. citizens and permanent residents have access to a different scholarship program offered by the University of Iowa – known as domestic non-resident scholarships
  • Have applied for admission into the first year of the University of Iowa. 

What is the Dollar Value of the International Distinction in Education Award? 

It is valued at between $500 and $10,000 per year. The number of scholarships awarded per year may vary. But the exact number has never been made known to the public.

The International Distinction In Education Award (IDEA) is purely merit-based. Awardees are decided based on a holistic consideration of their performance during the admission documentation and testing. How Do You Apply for the International Distinction in Education Award?

Candidates are not required to apply for this scholarship program. Instead, winners have decided automatically during admission processes.

Duration

This scholarship grant is available to each winner for up to eight semesters or until they receive their bachelor’s degree – whichever one comes first. 

However, to keep the scholarship running, 

  • A winner must maintain continuous full-time enrollment at the University of Iowa. This amounts to a minimum of 12 semester hours.
  • A winner must maintain a minimum of 2.50 cumulative GPA. 
  • A winner must continue to pay non-resident tuition while remaining in international student status.

In addition to these documents, ideal candidates for admission into the University of Iowa must be in sound academic standing (judging by their high school records and one-on-one assessment). They must also score a minimum of 3.33 cumulative GPA on the unofficial University of Iowa grade report. Applicants from certain countries may be required to meet certain English language/other languages requirements.
