How Do You Apply for A German Student’s Visa?

German Student’s Visa Application, First, you need to know that a student’s visa only allows an international to remain in Germany for only three months. What this means is that you will have to apply for a residence permit within that period.

Your residence permit allows you a maximum of two years of stay in the country. It can be renewed for another term within two years.

When it comes to applying for the visa properly, it is pretty straightforward. All you need to do is to contact the German embassy or consulate in your country for the process to kick off. It could be as simple as placing a call or writing an email.

You can also choose to visit your local German foreign mission office physically. If you prefer this option, you can get a complete list of all the German diplomatic missions here

It would help if you allowed anything between 25 days and several months for your German Student’s visa to be processed. But, ultimately, the duration will depend on the type of visa, the country you are coming from, and, by implication, the particular foreign mission.

As it concerns student visas, a Schengen visa takes about three weeks to be ready, while a German National Visa may take months. So, you are advised to apply for your choice early enough with this information in mind.

What Are the Types of German Visas That You Can Apply for As A Student?

There are two types of German visas that are available to you as a student. They are:

  • Schengen visa
  • German National Visa

Schengen Visa

If your study program in Germany is going to last for three months or less, this is the type of visa you will have to need.

German National Visa

If your study program in Germany is going to last more than three months, by the way, you will have to apply for a German National Visa. With this visa type, you will be eligible to extend your stay in the country by getting a residence permit for your studies. Quickly you can apply for a residence permit at the Foreigners Office.

Before we continue, it may make sense to tell you this: We have noticed that some international students in Germany are in the habit of waiting for their entry visas to expire before they begin a rat race to renew them. So we instead advise that you save yourself the hassles by getting your entry visa renewed while the expiry is still a long way off.

The Financial Side of the Matter

Germany has got stringent visa application rules. For example, one of the rules requires you to supply what is called ‘finanzierungsnavhweis.’ Translated to English, this stands for “proof of financial resources.”

To scale through the visa application rules, one of the things you must do is prove that you have enough money to sustain your stay in the country. One Important way to verify your financial status is to block the sum of 10,236 Euros in your bank account for a year.

The rate of German visa applicant rejections is high. For example, in 2018 and 2019, respectively, it was reported that there were 241,796 and 268,856 rejections. Therefore, one secret for avoiding rejection is to block the sum mentioned above in your account.

So, What Is A Blocked Account?

A blocked account can be seen as a type of bank account where you leave a certain amount of money for a specified period to prove your financial capability as a prospective student in Germany. For example, it has been estimated that an average student in Germany lives on 854 euros per month. So, the amount left in your blocked account must be sufficient to cater to this for at least a year. For the best-performing blocked accounts, the banks we recommend are Fontina and Sutor.
